Macklin Green - m Martha ? London about 1700
« on: Sunday 11 January 15 06:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I had been looking for an  Elizabeth Green who married Zach Whale in Assington in 1731 and believe I  have found her bapt. Nayland, 1709 d/o Macklin & Martha. (on FindMyPast)

In  looking for a Macklin Green marriage  I have found him and a Martha Weston in a marriage  Licence issued by the Faculty Office, London. (Found this source on And…y). No place listed but presume it to be in London.

Using F/S I have found 2 children baptised in Nayland, Suffolk (1701 & 1709)  and some bapt. in East Lockinge, Berks.(1721 - 1725) as well as London (1701 & 1717.18)

Strange as it may be, I have found a certificate admitting a Mary Green, born Nayland, Suffolk,  d/o of Macklin Green, Blacksmith in the City of London, into the Freedom of the City 1727.

Additionally have also found an indenture of Macklin Green being an apprentice blacksmith to his father, also Macklin Green in 1692, in London.

To complicate the issue, I have come across a similar named family of Macklin Green & wife Martha baptising 4 children in East Lockinge, Berks 1721 - 1725 although 2 died the last being 5-1726. But the interesting thing to note is Macklin was recorded as Mr.Macklin Green & wife Martha as if to signify he was “someone” in E/lockinge.

Could  these all be the same family who baptised children in both Nayland, Suffolk 1701 & 1709 and in Lothbury & Whitechapel, London?  and Berks.    All the baptisms appear to fall logically;
Nayland, 1701, 1709
London; 1701, 1717, 1718,
E/Lockinge; 1721, 1722, 1723,1725 (burials 1721 & 1726)

I have even found a burial for a Macklin Green in Pershore, Worcs in 1748

Can anyone please help.

Have been on the Suffolk forum as per this link.

Body's Inhabitants of London Survey has this from the household of Macklin Green:
Macklin Green married 18 Feb 1668 St James Clerkenwell, to Elizabeth Sharp, occupation Citizen & Blacksmith, 1696 An? Oath Roll, 1700 poll list, Will 1702 PCC 95 Hern, wife Elizabeth, children Benoin, Phillip, Macklin, Elizabeth married Birchall.

His will written in 1701 names numerous properties in Southwark (relating to St Thomas Hospital) and others, is Hasd to read. Wife Elizabeth and all children are mentioned.

London Lives mentions has a couple of mentions of the St Thomas properties in 1726.

Interesting too that there is a Macklin Green s/o John & Bridget baptised 1705, buried 1707 in Gloucestershire.

St James Dukes Palace City of London has the following marriages:
4 Mar 1692 Phillip Green B, Mary Campsan? S, Macklin Green F
9 Jul 1692 Benoin Green B, Mary Foot S, Phillip Green Fr.
Really not sure what the name at the end is? Have never seen it before but it looks like in Phillips case it is his fathers name!?!?

St Margaret Lothbury has these two burials on the same page:
Macklin Green was buried the 20th of April 1702 in the vault
Macklin Green the son of Macklin Green was buried 4th May 1702 in the vault.

Same church has the baptism of Elizabeth d/o Macklin & Martha his wife, born & baptised 4th May 1703.

So was the Macklin buried above Macklin Norton (Norton not clear at all on original) son of Macklin Jnr & Martha?

Hi Jo,

You have supplied some very interesting info. Are your sources available on-line? and if so,
where can I go to find the details, please.

So was the Macklin buried above Macklin Norton (Norton not clear at all on original) son of Macklin Jnr & Martha?
I'm not sure. Its more than likely as I have his baptism entry 18-9-1701 St.Margaret, Lothbury, London.

On my way out - will come back to you later.

Hi Alan,

All records were available on either Ancestry or FindMyPast, searching with Mac* provided a few (I have submitted alternative names to some of the records!), Several other children for Macklin Snr & Elizabeth, but must have died as not named in his will. If I was you i would read through all the St Dukes marriage records and the St Margaret Lothbury births as transcription errors would be easy with these names. There seems to be substantial gaps in the baptisms of Macklin Jnr & Martha??

Back to work, will look again later, Jo  :)

Just had a quick look on ancestry with Ma*in and found some more for you to look up, this of particular interest:
Martha, wife of Macklin Greene, Smith, buried 5 Nov 1667, St Giles Cripplegate (cause of death given but I cant read it?),
Frances, wife of Macklin Greene, Blacksmith, buried 19 Sept 1668, St Giles Cripplegate (same cause of death - looks like childbod??)
Marriage of Macklin to Elizabeth Sharpe  Feb 1668 at same church also found.

Not sure how many wife's old Macklin had? Or how many Macklin Greens there were???

Also put Macklin (Macklyn) in the search field of London Lives and there is an entry showing MG taking over a lease from his mother in law Elizabeth Sharpe for one & forty years.....
