Request assistance reading portion of 1851 census
« on: Tuesday 20 January 15 23:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi- Could someone help me read this parsed portion of the census about my ancestors? I am having trouble making out almost all of it, especially the town (Drumchapel Colliery?) the father's name (is it Bardner? At first I thought that must be a mistake and it was supposed to be Bernard, but it sure looks like Bardner-of whom I can find no other record)
I also cannot read the father's occupation and really just taking a stab at the towns of birth. Any help on reading this and interpretations of the information would be much appreciated!

Hello jmara,
Following loobylooayr's lead, could the last place name be Westthorn, Lanarkshire?

               Regards,     Dod.

That all makes sense. thank you.
Fifer also suggested that the father's occupation read Coal Lb which likely meant coal laborer. With his sons as coal miners that makes perfect sense, too. Thanks to all!

That fits Dod and looks good for this family, there certainly was a colliery there. A death recorded there in 1801 at http://www.scottishmining.co.uk/326.html from googling it appears that Westthorn was in Shettleston Parish but prior to that came under Barony [Glasgow].

"The parish, which was originally a part of Barony parish from which it was civilly disjoined in 1847, is in the presbytery of Glasgow and synod of Glasgow and Ayr" http://www.scottish-places.info/towns/townhistory498.html

Hopefully jmara can now trace Thomas' OPR birth.

Hi all,

Looks good then for West Thorn (or is it all one word) Westthorn , Lanarkshire.
Have to admit I've never heard of it before  :P
Learn something new every day.

Looby.

PS. Would have thought perhaps the family would be in Barony/Shettleston area at time of 1841 given that young Thomas's age is correct.
