Where is Anny/Arney?
« on: Saturday 24 January 15 21:11 GMT (UK) »
Hi there - I need help identifying a place name in relation to a John McGrath who served in the 58th Regiment 1823-1847, was sent to NSW and then NZ... (I believe he might have stayed in NZ). His military details say that he was from Co. Cavan and the place name is Anny (sometimes spelt Arney?). Any ideas where this might be exactly?

Description:
JOHN MCGRATH
Born ANNY, Cavan
Served in 58th Foot Regiment
Discharged aged 40

Hi,
The closest which I can find is Annagh ( sounds like Anny). However there are several townlands (small administrative areas) called Annagh in Co Cavan. However there is also a parish called Annagh which someone stating where he was from is most likely to use. This is in the town of Cavan district.

Regards
Stewart, Irwin, Morrison, Haslett, Murrell - Dungiven area Co. Londonderry
Browne, Barrett -Co.Armagh
Neil, Smyth _Co. Antrim

Since I posted this I have been studying Irish place names. I'm now mostly certain that "Anny" is a variation for the parish Annagh (Anglicised form of Eanach/Eanagh). [The person I am researching has military records stating his parish was "Anny" in County Cavan.]
Irish Place Names by Deirdre and Laurence Flanaghan. "EANACH. Means 'watery place, fen, marsh or swamp'. Since such areas are common in Ireland, the word, usually Anglicised as 'annagh, anna, or anny' is common in Irish place names throughout the country."
Topographical Dictionary of Great Britain and Ireland by John Gorton (Chapman and Hall 1833). "ANNAGH, Co. Cavan, Ulster I. P.T. Belturbet (77) m. Pop 10,488. A parish, partly in the barony of Upper Loughtree, including a portion of the town of Belturbet, and partly in the barony of Tullaghgarvey, including the village of Redhills. The living is a rectory and vicarage, val. in K. B. 30/. sterling, in the diocese of Kilmore and archdiocese of Armagh; church in good repair. The number of children education in this parish is 565."
