Job Occupation Help
« on: Monday 26 January 15 18:53 GMT (UK) »
Hello!

Im trying to work out John Jones's job occupation here in 1841. It looks like Bolsterer but i dont know what that is? Ive tried googling but no luck. In 1848 he is listed as a Pot Seller on his daughters marriage certificate.

Also can you make sense of his son Thomas's job????

Thanks in advance. x

Bolsterer, bolster maker, bolster stamper; a hand forger who welds a bolster iron out of which shoulders and tang of knife are shaped, onto hand forged blade of knife. "A Dictionary of Occupational Terms"

From the OED Bolster =  The projecting ‘shoulder’ of a knife, chisel, etc., where the blade is inserted into the handle.

Thomas's occupation looks as if it could be Shoe Maker with an I in front of the shoe, possibly Industrial  :-\

Instructions to the enumerator are here http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~framland/census/1841directions.htm

They include the instruction to use 'J' for journeyman and 'm' for maker - so as Lostris says he's a Journeyman shoe maker.
