I am looking for birth Parents of a grandfather James Howatson, not sure of birth think it was around 1778/9 he married Jean Scot on the 2nd Oct 1807 in Cannongate Edinburgh Midlothian Scotland we haven't got a marriage cert so don't know the name of his father or where he was born   hope you can help so we can go forward with the tree   thanking you Wolly

Wolly, official registration in Scotland only began in Scotland from 1855. So, there is no marriage cert to be found, only an entry if lucky on the Old Parish Registers.

There does seem to be one here on the LDS index https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XT1P-F4Y

For the area, you often find the clerks included the name of the bride's father, but not the groom's father.

You can look at the image of the OPR entry www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/  Entries limited in terms of info. Likely no more than a line or two on the Register. You would need to view the entry to confirm what is on it.
