Their marriage entry appears within the St Mary, Kirkby Lonsdale register on the 23 Aug 1751. They were recorded as Joseph Shiphard & Anne Rawlinson both of Mansergh. Their marriage-bond, of the same date, adds that Joseph was a husbandman and Anne a spinster. Joseph made his mark on the bond, while their bondsman - John ATKINSON of Mansergh, Yeoman, signed. Their ages (on the bond) were recorded as 23+ for Joseph and 26 for Anne. However, note that ages on bonds are extremely unreliable and often under-stated (more so as the difference between their real-age and 21 increases).
Their marriage entry is the first reference to a Joseph SHEPHERD (incl. var. spell.) within the St Mary, Kirkby Lonsdale register in the 18th century. Their first two children were baptised within Mansergh (Jonathan 1751, John 1753), yet following this, baptisms ceased to be held within Mansergh for a period. Therefore, although the remainder of their children were baptised within Middleton, they may not have resided there.
Both Joseph and Anne moved to Docker, as she was recorded as being of Docker Hall, when buried in Kirkby Lonsdale on the 25 Mar 1775. Joseph's second wife, Jane {married name ADDISON}, was also buried within Kirkby Lonsdale on the 8 Jul 1801, being of Docker Hall, aged 58. Finally, Joseph himself was buried in Kirkby Lonsdale on the 12 Jul 1817, being of Docker and aged 88. Joseph left a will, probate dated the 5 Jan 1818.
Therefore, in this case, it appears as though Joseph's age on his marriage bond was reasonably accurate, yet don't assume that the same applies to the age of his first wife Anne.
