Seeking old street photo
« on: Wednesday 04 February 15 11:45 GMT (UK) »
My partners G(several) grandfather, Reuben Barrow, ran a grocers (and sometime pork butchers) at No 7, Victoria Rd in Brighton, at least from 1851 to 1891.

It appears that either a spin off or a competitor was a butcher at No 6.

Courtesy of the magic of google I know where this is

And attach a photo of the current building. It certainly looks like an ex-shop. :)

Does anyone know where I might get a photo of the shop ideally in or near the period the ancestor was there?

There's a few here, but not of the shop, but gives an idea of the surroundings.

Sussex Family History Group's transcription of the baptisms and burials of Reuben's children at St Nicholas Church suggest he was always in the area, but took a while to become a butcher.

Reuben married Eliza Selden at St Nicholas in 1834

Eliza Elizabeth 1836 dtr of Reuben the Shoemaker of Regent Hill
Joseph 1838         (On IGI but no baptism found on SFHG. Death address was Victoria Street) died 1845
Sarah Ann 1839    dtr of Reuben the Shoemaker of Victoria STREET
Reuben 1841        son of Reuben the Shoemaker of Victoria STREET
Frank 1842           son of Reuben the Shoemaker of Victoria STREET
Sylvia 1844           dtr of Reuben the Shoemaker of Victoria STREET     (Died 1845)
Mary Martha 1846  dtr of Reuban now a Laundry man of Victoria Street
Caroline 1849        dtr of Reuben the Laundry man of 27 Victoria Street   (Died 1854)
Frederick 1850      son of Reuben the Laundry man but of Victoria ROAD  (Died 1853)
George 1853        son of Reuban now a Green Grocer of Victoria Road.

(I have ommitted the actual baptism and burial dates in the hope you will consider membership of SFHG)

Victoria Street and Victoria Road intersect at the building you have featured.
I may be wrong (an early street directory may prove that to be so) but in my opinion, the corner property you have featured has certain characteristics not of a shop, but of a former public house, with number 7 (round the corner) adjoining it.  Perhaps another Rootschatter could check that out?
