Is anybody able to look-up some Baptisms at the Archives at Halifax please.

They are for The Wesleyan Chapel at Greetland:1 Dec 1799  Susannah Hey
                                                                  & 17 May 1812  Ann Hey.

I am mainly interested in their abode.

Many thanks, Eric.

Hi,

Susannah Hey - daughter of Job and Sarah Hey -- abode Greetland. Born Nov 11 1799 baptised
 Dec 1 1799.

Haven't found Ann yet, but there is also a John born 1804 also born Greetland, son of Job and Sarah.

Just found the following -- abode Greetland in all cases;

Joseph 1802 (parents Job and Sally)
William 1806 (parents Job and Sarah)
James  1808 (as above)
Ann 1812 (as above)

There may be more --- there seems to be several Hey families -- probably brothers of Job -- such as Absolam - having children in this chapel

Hi Pennines.

Many thanks. That's the family. I just wanted to pin down where they were living at the time. They mostly gave their abode as Skircoat Green when I found later records.

Ann, who is my main interest, gave her place of birth as Halifax and North Dean Halifax on Censuses, so I think I am in the right neck of the woods.

While you have the records, would you be good enough to check if a Non Conformist burial 22 Jan 1826 for Job Haigh is at Greetland, please.

Many thanks, Eric

Hi Eric,

The burial is for Job Haigh, son of John Haigh, 5 mths , abode Halifax. Interred 22 Jan 1826.

A 'Susey Hey' was buried at the Independent Square Chapel at Halifax on 15 Jan 1815 -- but there are absolutely no supporting details. I just wondered if she might have been your Susannah.

I cannot see a burial for your Job at the moment in that location.

Hi Pennine.

Not to worry, just a thought. The problem is that the surname seems to vary from Hey, Heys and Haigh, so just fishing.

It's not my Susannah either.

It looks like the Mother, Sarah was buried at Sowerby Bridge, so there might be a clue there, but as you said, there are a lot of Heys in the area.

It's taken me years to get this far, so I'm not too worried about a burial just yet.

Thanks again, Eric.

Hi Eric,

Interestingly there was a Job Hey (and a James Hey) who were amongst a group of 14 Luddites hung on 16 Jan 1813 for an attack on Rawfolds Mill. The group sang a Methodist hymn on their way to the scaffold.

The Job and the James Hey are buried at York Castle Prison Cemetery. There may be something in the on-line papers about this, which may indicate whether this particular Job Hey was yours.

I don't know if the link will work --- but check the 'Find A Grave' site.

According to newspaper reports at that time eg Leeds Mercury --- Job Hey was from North Dean. North Dean seems to be part of Greetland. See -

Very interesting. I'll have to find time to go through all this.

The dates and place seem to fit. North Dean is how his daughter Ann described her place of birth. North Dean Woods seems to be an area between Greetland and the river. Job's last child seems to have been born 1812.

Thanks again, Eric
