The Ellings of Merther nas Lamorran
« on: Thursday 12 February 15 07:46 GMT (UK) »
Trying to find information about the  Ellings family of Lamorran and Merther. Particularly James Ellings who appears on the 1861census aged 36.

I wondered if they were gypsys?

The baptisms can be found on Cornwall-OPC-Database, and on all of them James is a Labourer.

Marriage:
22nd November 1846 at Lamorran
James Elings, of full age, Bachelor, Labourer, of Lamorran   to
Elizabeth Crowl, of full age, Spinster, of Lamorran

Fathers: Charles Elings
Witnesses: William Cock and James Curgenven

James signed as James Heling

And his baptism:
27th June 1824 at Lamorran
James Elings, son of Charles and Elizabeth Elings.
Charles a labourer

Wow thanks why didnt i find this?
However the family is to say the least elusive. I cant find James anywhere apart from this cencus entry.
My great grandmother is Elizabeth Hannah Ellings (who later married Walter Harris) recorded as Elizabet A Ellings in the census. Walter was a farm worker. They both died in Truro in 1942.

All I know about the Ellings family are the fading childhood memories of my 94 year old father who considered them gypsy types ??? ;D

A few pointers!

First, don't get hung up on spellings! Ag Labs (like a lot of my ancestors) were pretty much illiterate and, in any case, it was the priest, enumerator or registrar who wrote the names down! ;D
Already I can see Ellings, Elings and Hellings! ::)

Secondly, for Cornish ancestors, use Cornwall-OPC-Database.
It's free, and requires no registration.
OK, it's not 100% coverage, but nearly all parishes are covered.

Thirdly, remember when searching then less is more!
If you enter all search fields, you may get a hit. BUT if you only enter a few search items you will get a lot more hits

I have Maria Ellens (all spellings) who married John Thomas Truan (all spellings!)
Her father was Charles and her mother Elizabeth ?.
Maria was born abt 1838 and lived in Merther. She had eight brothers and sisters.
Maria and her husband eventually lived in Camborne.
