Schools in Shrewsbury
« on: Tuesday 17 February 15 13:45 GMT (UK) »
An old letter that I have states that my g g grandfather was a pupil at Shrewsbury Grammar School some time around 1825 (Patrick Delany was born in 1812). I've contacted the School but they can find now reference to him. How many other schools were there in the town around that time? The family lived in Madely so I assume he was a boarder.

Could you copy over the phrase in the letter that made you think it was Shrewsbury Grammar School?

Not having much luck with google searches for other schools.

Hi both, sorry for the slow reply. Have managed to find the letter and it actually says "was a pupil at Shrewsbury School". I must have Googled it and come to the(wrong) conclusion that it was the Grammar School!  Still,if he wasn't a pupil at the Grammar school, where would he likely have attended?

Hi Gwen,

Shrewsbury School is a public school. Mauricej's link below is to their website. However the school only moved to it's present location in 1882 so if your gr gr grandfather was a pupil around 1825 he would have attended the old school which is now the town library.

Charles Darwin was a pupil there and might well have been there at the same time as your ancestor as he started there in 1818 aged 9 and stayed for around 7 years.
