Great! Glad the Queensland record turned out to be a winner!

Had a quick look for Samuel McClay's death record on the Queensland records and see a death recorded in 1946, father Joseph, mother Margaret.

There's a birth record for a Samuel McClay, Tullyaugnish Parish church, Ramelton, Donegal, 1853, father Joseph, mother Margaret which could be a possible match.
McCorkell, Clarke, Williams, Craig, Baird, Peoples, MacDonald, Wray and associated families, Counties Donegal and Londonderry, Ireland and America

Thanks, scotmum- found, and read, all 73 pages of his WWI file. Have also been through Queensland vital records, Trove, etc. finding lots more information on the McClays.

Thanks again, joemc- I never would have found them without your help.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
