1831 Enumeration Question (Wallsend)
« on: Saturday 21 February 15 16:40 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am looking for a family unit in 1831

William Lenox (or Lennox, Linox, Lenax) and his wife Alice (nee Atkinson I believe)

They should have two children living with them (at the least)

Isabella Lenox (b.abt 1828)
Alice Lenox (b. abt 1830)

Both Isabella and Alice were born in Wallsend.  Their brother, William Lennox would be born in 1833- (he is living with his sister, Isabella, and brother in law, William Barker, in Wingate Parish, Durham in the 1851 census)

I read that there are no national census's for this particular time, but I was wondering perhaps if there were some sort of local enumerations where the family could possibly be found.  William was a Coal Miner (pitman) if that helps any.

Even if the 1831 census exists for Wallsend, it will only show the head of the household, and the numbers of males and females in the house.

That's why it's pretty much useless for FH purposes! ;D

There were National Censuses 1801, 1811, 1821 and 1831
List of names from some censuses BEFORE 1841 were kept and have survived - admittedly in a rare number of cases, but Jeremy Gibson and Mervyn Medlycott say in their booklet "Local Census Listings 1522-1930: Holdings in the British Isles" that over 750 parish listings have been found for the censuses of 1801, 1811, 1821 and 1831. The lists are in the majority confined to heads of households, with numbers of other household members given (sometimes divided by sex and age groups), but in some cases full names of all members of a household are given. These lists were retained by particularly conscientious enumerators after they had sent the statistics to central government, often for use in other situations, i.e. Poor Law administration. Some of these lists have been published by family history societies. So it is not strictly correct to say that no names are available before 1841.

According to "Pre-1841 Censuses & Population Listings" the only surviving 1831 census for Northumberland is for Heddon on the Wall, which has all persons named with ages.
