Register of Soldiers Effects
« on: Sunday 22 February 15 08:59 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if the Register of Soldiers Effects for WW1 on Ancestry is complete?
I ask because a cousin, Walter William Janes, died of wounds in 1917. He is on the CWGC site,  but not on soldiers effects.  I also looked for a friends great uncle and could not find him either.  He died in 1921 in a hospital in London and again is on the CWGC site.
James -Victoria, Australia originally from Keynsham, Somerset.
Janes - Keynsham and Bristol area.
Heale/Hale - Keynsham, Somerset
Vincent - Illogan/Redruth, Cornwall.  Moved to Sculcoates, Yorkshire; Grass Valley, California; Timaru, New Zealand and Victoria, Australia.
Williams somewhere in Wales - he kept moving
Ellis - Anglesey

The blurb on Ancestry is wrong on this page. 'Effects' went to the next of kin only if the soldier did not leave a will leaving his estate to someone else. My great uncle wrote a will in favour of his 'supposed' sweetheart. She got his effects plus his medals - verified by signed receipts in his service record. His parents got the memorial plaque as the order authorizing the plaques stated that it should go to the next of kin.

The next of kin was included on the man's service record. In this period a husband had control of his wife's wealth. So the father would be first NoK. I have been researching a soldier whose father was dead and the son's 'effects' went to the executors of his father's estate, rather than to his mother.

Thanks everyone for your helpful responses. Although my relative had a wife and child...the inscription on his headstone appears to have been paid for by his Mother...I will take another look as I did look in the obvious places and failed to find it.
