Robert James Utteridge 13 Harpenden Road, W. Norwood, SE 27

Robert  James Utteridge who gave his wartime address as 13 Harpenden Road, W. Norwood, SE 27  was a Leading Aircraftsman Air Gunner of a 142 Squadron Battle that was shot down 14 October 1940 at Rouen on an operation to Foret de Gault, Utteridge was taken prisoner.

In Stalag Luft VI and Stalag 357 Utteridge along with my father Walter Layne and 5 other NCO s from their mess formed a combine for self preservation.  They pooled all of their resources as a group.  They would barter and scavenge for food and fuel and share the cooking responsibilities.



It appears that Robert Utteridge was an educated man as he has written in my father's log book a Greek quote by Socrates, ο τροπος ςαομων τον ανθρωπον εστον    which translates as “The evil way is in a human’s nature.”

13 Harpenden Road for many years have Brenda May, Mary,Hannah and Herbert UTTERIDGE living there,probably his parents and sisters. Robert James appears there in 1948.

There is a death of a Robert James Utteridge in Apr Qtr 2001 - Redcar and Cleveland His birth is listed as 5 April 1912   

Looking at Brenda M's possible birth in 1915 on FreeBMD  with maiden name  McCabe I wonder whether Robert was just register as Male Utteridge  (mothers names McCabe) Jun Qtr 1912   Marylebone 1a 886

Looks like Robert James had just one sibling, Brenda May.   Both died in Cleveland - she unmarried but a Doris Mabel Utteridge b.1912 died in Cleveland too so possibly wife of Robert although I can't find a marriage.
 
Mother Hannah died 1932 and appears Herbert remarried to a Mary McCabe in 1935 - a daughter Margaret M. born and died in 1936.

He swapped his names round and married as James R Utteridge in Cheltenham in Sept 1967

to Doris M Ilsley
