I grew up in Mirfield and knew several Illingworths.

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

That is great information from you both -- thank you.

Mike --- just a pity you didn't grow up in Mirfield when the Illingworths  I am researching were around!

The questions you could have answered -- the time I would have saved -- the hours of 'fun' I would have missed!

Hi

If you are the Waterroyd one you shouldn't ignore Hartshead and Liversedge it is very near the parish boarders.

Thank you, John.

That is very useful to know.

Much later on - my direct Illingworth line did end up in Liversedge for a while -- however I hadn't realised that it was so close to Mirfield.

It's these early registers which are a real problem. The filmed versions of Parish Registers for Mirfield in the 1600s are virtually illegible.

The transcribers have had the most awful job trying to decipher the entries and I suspect have just had to omit many. Can't blame them either.

For what it's worth, I have in pdf format the registers of Mirfield covering 1559 - 1770!
(Could always load to dropbox and supply a link if required)
Book is The register of the parish of Mirfield by William Brigg

Brian,

That is SO very kind of you, but I have access to;

1. The filmed records on Ancestry
2. The transcribed records which are also on Ancestry in a book -- hidden away under 'Yorkshire Parish Records'
3. booklets from Huddersfield Family History Society --- however these are simply alphabetical lists with no additional info.

So there is no excuse for me struggling like I am. I am now working on the theory that my family moved INTO the parish, possibly from Halifax.

I am such a 'nerd' that I have many West Yorks records covering my ancestor's parishes -- so if I can ever reciprocate your kind offer, I will happily do so.

Regards

June

Hi

Liversedge only opened in 1816 and before that it part of Birstall parish but also look out for other village names; Little Thorpe, Roberttown, Crossley & Norristhorpe all near to the Mirfield edge of the Birstall & Hartshead parishes.
