George Hardy b1818 Beccles Suffolk
« on: Sunday 01 March 15 16:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi,  Another Hardy brick wall!! in a difficult to search county.

Have George with some confidence born in Beccles - FindMyPast, Suffolk Baptism Index (pt1) Transcription and ties in with his parents James and Sophia Hardy.

A marriage to a Elizabeth or Matilda in 1843 - freeBMD v13, 1175 Thingoe? Suffolk.

1841 census 780,51,21- back in Norfolk, profession millwright OK (his family were all millwrights) but don't recognize the other people listed.

Trail goes cold - nothing to link to a spouse.  Nothing plausible 1861 census.

Help please.

Mike.

Have you considered buying the marriage certificate to confirm whether it is Elizabeth or Matilda?

Added: Do you mean 1841 or 1851,

Either way, I cannot identify your numbers, am I putting them in reverse order?

Thank you keyboard and chempat,   I think the birth/baptism is OK as all the other children by James and Sophia were born Beccles.

Hi,  Have looked at the 1851 census  1791,137,26 the image is transcribed incorrectly, George's age should read 34 in the transcript (the character 3 is the same as another '3' correctly transcribed)

There is a death- George Hardy 1851, free BMD v13, p403, 17 Thingoe.

How can I be sure this George Hardy is the same George Hardy b1818 Beccles, Suffolk?

Would the marriage cert. give his father's name?  James Hardy.

Correctly shown on my site as 34, the marriage certificate would confirm if this George had a father James?

PS that George b Hawstead is still alive 1861 RG09/1137/89/11

Hello Mike

The George Hardy death 1851 Thinghoe district was; George Hardy age 8m buried Hawstead All Saints.

George HARDY age 53 buried 13 March 1870 Hawstead All Saints.  Age ties in with George son of James & Sophia but no mention of a burial of a James or Sophia in Hawstead although HARDY burials are recorded on the SBI back to 1813 in that parish.  (Source Suffolk Burial Index). Hawstead is near Bury St Edmunds the other side of the County to Beccles.

Also Hawstead All Saints.   Elizabeth HARDY age 84 buried 10 Nov 1892.

There is one Hardy burial recorded on the SBI in Beccles James Hardy buried 27 Jun 1822 age 33 no sign of Sophia.

K

Thank you for that important info Keziah2, The death for James 1822, Beccles, I have from the National Burial Index and ties in with his birth in 1789.  Would like to get a copy presumably from the Suffolk Record Office.

Do you think the marriage George and a Elizabeth Ashfield 1843 Thingoe (FreeBMD v13,1175) is plausible?  (before I order it ) Then I need to establish if there were any children of the marriage George Hardy d c1870 and Elizabeth Hardy d c1892.

Sophia Hardy had a base born daughter Lydia b1823 (Beccles) after James death in 1822. Sophia died in Norwich 1850 but nothing seen between these dates - nothing on the 1841 census either.

No mention of a George Hardy b1818 Beccles, Suffolk in the 1841, 1851 census

There is an interesting entry 1871 census  RG10, 1744,74,27  George Hardy, born Beccles  c1821 now in East Dereham with wife Sarah (not transcribed!!) is there any connection?

Mike.
