Arthur Checkley Golby - Aston-le-Walls - 1847-1904

Hi all,

I have been researching Arthur Checkley Golby, who lived in Aston-le-Walls.  He is not part of my own tree, but the research was regarding Joseph Merrick (aka The Elephant Man).

I have the census info about Arthur Checkley Golby, where he was living, etc.

He married Mary Ann Larrington in 1879.
Sons Frederick William Golby (1882) and Sidney Ernest Golby (1883) were born.  Both survived into adulthood.
Mary Ann died in 1902.
Arthur Checkley Golby remarried to Emma Foskett in 1903.
Arthur Checkley Golby died on 8th August 1904 and is buried at St Leonard's, Aston-le-Walls.


However, I have come across a baptism record:

Sydney Golby
Baptised 28th March 1898
Father: Arthur Checkley Golby
Mother: Victoria Ellen Golby
Abode: Aston-le-Walls
Father's Occupation: Farm Bailiff


There is an entry for Victoria Ellen Golby on the Aston-le-Walls burial records on 4th February 1902.  There is no age listed.


Firstly, who was Sydney?  And secondly, who on earth was Victoria Ellen?

If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it!

Bit of a mystery given you have her name from 2 separate sources

Mary Ann is still alive in 1901 and living with Arthur so no clues there

No birth reg for Sidney - mmmm

Very odd.

 The only other death registration in the Banbury registration district in the 1st. Qtr 1902 is a Sarah
 Ellen Golby aged 58, below that of Arthurs'  wife Mary Ann.

Freebmd has her as Sarah Ellen as does the GRO index

It's most strange - I could understand an error, but to have two separate entries with 'Victoria'.  I'm so confused!

Grrrrr!  It's so frustrating.  Can't find sight nor sound of Sydney or Victoria on the indexes.  Have tried to manipulate my brain into spotting anything a bit quirky.  Seems to have not worked, either!
