Thks I have seen that Robert Rice and I am hoping that he may be my relative. The birth certs of his children give his place of birth as Belfast, Dublin and London 
I was hoping the info at National Archives might give a place of birth and next of kin which could tie in with the names of his children

WO 12/10104 relates to statements of pay to various ranks, it ranges from 1st April  1871 to 1st March 1872.

there are three main sections: roll of married established (married allowance), effects and credits (payments made on behalf of those who had died, were killed, were missing or were prisoners of war) and pay & deductions (standard remuneration and deductions for misdemeanours or penalties for misbehaviour).

Robert Rice is mentioned in the latter.

I shall do some more digging and be in touch soon as.
