Help badly needed - Thornton / Adams
« on: Wednesday 04 March 15 21:16 GMT (UK) »
My 3 x Great Grandmother and Grandfather came to Scotland (Stirling) from Ireland .... their names were Bridget Thornton (various spellings) born approx 1821, and Walter Adams born approx 1811
They may have been Roman Catholics, John their eldest son (my 2 x great grandfather) married in Stirling in an R.C church this obviously dosent confirm that the whole family were R.C ... Bridget and Walter had three known children whilst living in Ireland: John born about 1841, Mary 1845 and Patrick 1849 ..... I am trying to ascertain what part of Ireland they were from, and wondered if anybody can give me any idea how I do this ??? Have tried looking for a marriage for Bridget and Walter with no succcess ..  They went on to have at least a further three children in Stirling and the first Scottish census records I have found them on is in 1861. Any help would be appreciated

Unfortunately the dates you are looking for are well before the start of civil registration in Ireland. Not all church records for this period survive but of those that do not all are available online. Before starting research in Irish records you really need to know the family's religion and where they came from (parish if not actual townland not even just the county).
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I am now fairly sure the family were Roman Catholic - you never know maybe when church records are released in the summer I may find my answer (fingers, toes and everything crossed)

Have you found them on Census returns in Stirling/ Scotland.
Where born answer may give a clue regards which part of Ireland they came from.

yes I have found them in Stirling,Scotland unfortunately it only says Ireland as place where born ......... have even tried tracking down family who could have been alive in 1911 but unfortunately nothing - actually not nothing found one member of the family but unfortunately it had ditto marks (same as above) when in fact she was born in Ireland !
