136 King Street, Govan
« on: Thursday 05 March 15 06:24 GMT (UK) »
William Paterson died in 1894 at 136 King Street, Govan.

In his 1893 poor relief application, it is recorded that ‘the proprietor of the house in which he lives is his uncle, who allows him to sit rent free and also occasionally assists him.’

I’m trying to determine the name of this uncle who, in 1894, was proprietor of 136 King Street, Govan.

There are no matches for 136 King Street, Govan, in the 1885 or 1895 Valuation Rolls on SP. However, in the 1905 Valuation Rolls, the owner is Mrs. Isabella Eadie or Miller and others/Trustees of the late John Macauslan. This John Macauslan is no relation.

Why is this address not in the earlier 1885 and 1895 Valuation Rolls?

How can I find out who the proprietor of 136 King Street, Govan, was in 1895?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Cheers,

Rodeo

Hi Monica

Yes, that post you cite is indeed related. Grim reading, isn't it?

I've since obtained William Paterson's complete poor law application (as well as those of his individual orphaned children), which refers to his uncle as proprietor of the house in King Street, Govan. I have no idea who this uncle is. I assumed it was William's paternal uncle (his father's brother, William Paterson) but that doesn't appear to be the case.

William Paterson's parents were John Paterson (1828-1878) and Janet Mack (1829 - 1904).

Thanks, Monica.

Cheers,

Rodeo

Have you notified SP that this address is missing from Valuation Rolls?

There was a King Street in Tradeston, which was in Govan parish. In the 1891 census there is an entry for William Paterson aged 22 years, a general labourer, born Glasgow.
He is a "visitor" at 110 King Street, Tradeston. Head of house was George Paterson aged 24 years, a general labourer born England. George has a wife Jane aged 25, born Ireland and a son George aged 1 year born Glasgow.

Do you have the details of William's death certificate? What was the exact date and place of death? Parents names? Informant of death?
Paterson, Torrance, Gilchrist - Hamilton Lanarkshire.
McCallum - Oban, McKechnie - Ross of Mull Argyll.
Scrim - Perthshire.
Liddell - Polmont,
Binnie - Muiravonside Stirlingshire.
Curran, McCafferty, Stevenson, McCue - Co Donegal
Gibbons, Weldon - Co Mayo.
Devlin - Co Tyrone.
Leonard - County Donegal & Glasgow.

That must be him Sancti, I wonder why I couldn't find him on ancestry? Too late on a Saturday night for me I think!
I've come across this Paterson/Mack couple before in the Hamilton records a few times, they may be related to my Hamilton Patersons in some way.

Hi Sancti and Lodger

No, I haven't notified SP about the missing address but will do.

Yes, Sancti, that's my William Paterson in the 1891 census.

William Paterson died of tuberculosis at 136 King Street, Govan, the informant being his widow, Catherine Paterson.

Cheers,

Rodeo
