FARMS IN THE AREA AROUND ALYTH
« on: Friday 06 March 15 07:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I have just found out that one of the farms my 3x great grandparents William &  Margery (known as May) had and it was situated about 3 miles out of Alyth getting towards Blairgowie.  His residence on the farm was named NORMAN CASTLE and the farm was known as NORMAN FARM.
From  what I have read in the newspaper archives it would seem that my 3xgreat grandfather had more than one farm at times during his life but the above mentioned farm was his home at the time he retired. This came about after his wife died in 1853 and the auction for Norman Castle and farm
was held early the following year.
Would anyone know if this farm is still in existence.

Cheers
Geoff

Hi Geoff,

Can you give us a location?  Was it near the motte?  Do you have the names of adjacent farms?

If you go to the National Library of Scotland maps website, click on "Series maps" and choose one of the larger scale 19th century Ordnance Survey maps (e.g. earlier 6" one), you will get a detailed map with a facility to move a slider bar to compare it with a modern map or a satellite image.

What was your ancestors name?

Do you know if they had berry fields as that surrounding area was well known for berry picking ?  ;D

Hi Throth, GR2 & ammack,

The Location is as I wrote approximately 3 miles out of Alyth & near Blairgowie. I have no idea what the Motte is. I have no idea of adjacent farms. Thank you for the website for the Maps.
In the advertisement for the auction it sounds as though it was a dairy & vegetable garden, there is no mention of any berries in any form.

My 3 x great grandparents were William & Margery CRICHTON nee TAYLOR.
Margery was born in Findo-Gask and known as May & Mary. Their daughter was christened Margery but known as May and another daughter was Mary.

That is all I know at the moment.

Regards
Geoff

FreeCEN 1851 Census
Back Burn , Alyth , Perth.
William Crichton 66 annuitant

As this date is fairly close to the time of death for his wife it seems strange that if he was owner of a farm that it is not documented as such :-\

What was Williams death date & what was listed as his profession ?

I couldn't find them in 1841 after 4hrs searching ??? ::) ;D

In 1841 I think William's wife is down as Amelia , address given as Loyal Alyth Perth.(freeCEN)

SP Wills has a William Crichton farmer died 11th Oct. 1864 at Loyal , near Alyth.

Sorry , wrong family  :P
