Before doing anything at all, I suggest you look at Historic Scotland's advice on looking after gravestones - see http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/graveyardleaflet3.pdf

This mentions other leaflets too - I've done the search for you, and you can find the list at http://www.historic-scotland.gov.uk/publicationsresults?query=graveyard&pubcategory=All&pubsubcategory=All&fromMonth=null&fromYear=null&toMonth=null&toYear=null

If the memorial is listed or scheduled, you may need permission to do anything, and in all cases best practice requires the services of a professional stone conservator. Historic Scotland points out among other things that some species of moss and lichen are protected by law, and there are only limited circumstances where they would consider cleaning stones to be appropriate.

Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth
