Publican Siblings
« on: Wednesday 11 March 15 10:13 GMT (UK) »
Morning

Two of my 3rd great grandfathers sibilings appear to have been publicans during some point of their lives, but I have yet to determine which pubs they ran.

Mary Ann Foord (nee Jacobs) was born 1823 in Charing, Kent. She can be found in the 1861 living with her sister in Folkestone, listed as widowed and her occupation as Publician. She died in 1865. Prior to this in 1851 she was a cook working in Ashford. She married Richard Foord in 1852 at Ashford (him listed as a labourer). Richard, along with their son, died between 1852 and 1859, both deaths registered in the Ashford district.

Stephen Jacob(s) was born 1828 in Charing, Kent. He disappears after the 1841 census and is next seen in 1863 marrying Anne Iddenden in the Canterbury district. I have not seen the marriage entry so I do not know what his profession was at this time. By 1871 they can be found living with Anne's mother in Bethersden, with Stephen's profession listed as publican. According to Melville's 1858 directory, Stephen was not the landlord of either pub in Bethersden at that time. By 1881 Stephen has remarried and is living in London working as a carman.

Can anyone help me identify either of the pubs these two individuals ran please?

She is classed as a visitor on the 1861 Folkestone census, have you any indication as to where she was living after she married.  Richards death certificate might help.

Thanks Nanny Jan for pointing out that site. This link has provided some of the answers: http://pubshistory.com/KentPubs/Ashford/QueensHead.shtml

Queens Head, 17 East Hill , Ashford

1858/Richard Foord/../../../Melvilles Directory ****
1862/Mrs Mary Ann Foord/../../../Post Office Directory ****
<Gap>
1874/William Dodd/../../../Post Office Directory ****

In addition I have just discovered Stephen Jacob was a soldier, serving in Crimea, Turkey and India for 15 years and was not discharged until late 1861.

Datewise from a family point of view:

1858/Richard Foord/../../../Melvilles Directory ****
1859 - Richard Foord dies
Late 1861 - Stephen Jacob leaves army
1862/Mrs Mary Ann Foord/../../../Post Office Directory ****
1863 - Stephen Jacob marries
1865 - Mary Foord dies

My thinking now is that Stephen took over the running of the Queen's Head after his sister death until William Dodd took over in the early 1870's. Maybe the Ashford FHS can confirm this

William Dodd was the publican for the Queens Head in the 1971 census
