Trying to trace a living relative who emigrated to the USA in the 1970's
« on: Saturday 14 March 15 09:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi

As per the title I'm trying to trace a living relative. I can find her in the  U.S. Public Records Index living in Hillsdale NJ in 1995 but need to know how I can find her now. I'm organising a large (300+) family gathering and would love to make contact.

Any ideas?

I'm based in London UK

Many thanks

Peter

Have you tried looking to see if she or any of her family are on LinkedIn or facebook?

LinkedIn is an excellent idea: it's worked for me.
Might be worth looking on MySpace, too.
Whitepages http://www.whitepages.com/ can be a good source of information.

Randy Majors' website http://www.randymajors.com/p/ancestorsearch.html makes Google searches rather easier and can throw up some useful hits.

You might try posting in the surname boards on RootsWeb: they seem to get more USA traffic than other countries.

Worth trying search engines other than Google. Metasearch such as http://www.dogpile.com/ could just bring something to the surface.

www.switchboard.com is another website that's similar to White Pages and might yield different results.

Have you thought of trying to contact a local newspaper in the area to see if they might run an article for you  ???

Hi Peter,

If you cannot find them on social media, or white pages...I think Sandra's idea of using a
local/community newspaper is an excellent idea. Hillsdale has a small population, just over
10,000. There is a community newspaper called the Westwood Hillsdale Patch.

Many, many thanks to all for your ideas.

Facebook and LinkedIn came up blank but then she is 67yo so maybe not as comfortable with online stuff and likely retired anyway.

However.... White pages came up trumps and found her just over the state line in Monsey, NY!

Great start to my Saturday morning!

Many thanks once again to all who took the time to share your ideas
