LOCHGOILHEAD-ARGYLL OPR Question
« on: Saturday 14 March 15 19:52 GMT (UK) »
I found an OPR baptism record from LOCHGOILHEAD-ARGYLL 1726 on ScotlandsPeople it reads:

"John McGlen in Crigo his son Duncan baptized"

What does the "in Crigo" mean? Is that the place John McGlen was from? If so might it be Craigo, Scotland?

Thanks for any thoughts.

It means that's where he lived within the parish of Lochgoilhead. Not Craigo, as that is on the opposite side of Scotland. If you go to http://maps.nls.uk you can look at old maps of the area. The Ordnance Survey maps from the mid 1800s may show Crigo.

I can't see a Crigo on the 1842-1882 OS map, but there are a couple of places which begin with the word Creagan. Given the inconsistency of spelling back in the 1700, Crigo could well be Creagan.

Would be worth reading the entry for Parish of Lochgoilhead in the Statistical Account of Scotland for 1790.

Hi Ryan,
I too have a marriage record from Lochgoilhead 1757 which reads in part "lawfull daughter to the deceased John Mckoel late tennant  in Craig"
There has to be a placename similar to that in Lochgoilhead parish in the mid 1700's.

Thanks for the help again. And wanted to give an update.

I believe I was able to find "Crigo" in Lochgoilhead and Kilmorich parish. I was looking through maps form the 1870s and a small settlement is recorded as Creagdhu and is about 7 miles walk from Lochgoilhead and under a mile walk from Ardgartan. It does not appear to be listed on any modern maps. Here is an image of part of the map.

Ryan,
this is a reply that I received from Monica when I was searching for Craig  I found this to be very helpful.
Wyanga

think Gaunanbeg might show here http://maps.nls.uk/view/74400198 to the top of Loch Goyle/Goil (a few spellings for it) and then right, close to the shore of Loch Long.

Craigs is to the left of this, on the shores near the top of Loch Goyle.

Main map for area with joins http://maps.nls.uk/joins/581.html  Been looking at top right map of the four.

Hi Wyanga,

Gosh thanks for sharing. Looking at that map I can see Craigs clearly marked right next to Lochgoilhead! Looks like this is a better candidate for "Crigo."

I went back and looked at the baptism recorded again and one could argue that it is "Crigs" rather than "Crigo" thanks!

I realise this is an old thread but I just stumbled upon it, and wondered if you had checked for siblings of Duncan, which might clarify where John is from.

I thought the 'o' might be an e, hence Crige ...  :-\
