Loyal Poor Man's Friend Lodge of Oddfellows, Nantwich
« on: Sunday 15 March 15 21:05 GMT (UK) »
Hello
An article from the Nantwich Guardian dated 22nd March 1893
Mr Peter Billington died in one of the almshouses belonging to Mr Edmund Wright's Charity, Nantwich.
Also states:
Peter Billington was initiated as a member of the Loyal Poor Man's Friend Lodge of Oddfellows in September 1838.  At the time of his death he was the oldest member.
Does anyone have any information relating to the Lodge of Oddfellows in Nantwich?
With thanks,
marthaannie

Hello chempat

Thank you for the link, I have now emailed and asked if they are able to help me with my research of Peter Billington from his initiation in September 1838 to his death in 1893.

I found another article relating to the Lodge at Nantwich in the Cheshire Observer and General Advertiser dated Saturday 15th September 1860, page 5.  Article reads: Grand Odd-Fellows Procession at Nantwich on Thursday 6th September 1860, 25th Anniversary.  Unfortunately for me, Peter Billington is not mentioned.

Not unusual I think?  I also emailed the Oddfellows in regard to my great grandfather who was a big supporter of the organisation and never received a reply. Compare that to Nautilus (merchant navy union) who always do their best to help out with queries on merchant seamen.

Hello Certacito
Pleased to hear Nautilus are helpful.
On my next visit to Chester Record Office I will enquire if records relating to the Oddfellows are held there.  If successful I will post on this message board.

Were the parents of your Peter Thomas BILLINGTON & Hannah HILDITCH?

I did some research for a guy in Australia and have about 52 BILLINGTON names on my computer in small family units.

You may have if interested....pm me your e mail

Hello elzabels

I will certainly pm you, thank you, so pleased you left this message.

In case anyone else is interested in the Billington family from Nantwich.
Hugh and Margaret (Minshull) Billington my 5 x grt grandparents
Thomas and Hannah (Ann) Billington my 4 x grt grandparents
Their daughter Elizabeth Billington had a son named Peter Billington.
Thomas and Hannah (Ann) did have a son named Peter who died at 3yrs.
Perhaps the Peter you mentioned was Thomas and Hannah's grandson?
Or maybe there was another child named Peter that I don't have on my tree.....

The Peter in the Loyal Poor Man's Friend Lodge of Oddfellows in Nantwich:
Peter 5th child of Hugh and Margaret Billington
Grandson Peter Billington who married Martha Singleton and at one time lived at the Peacock, Crewe Road, Nantwich, was the member.

Thank you for your interest, marthaannie
