« on: Thursday 19 March 15 06:02 GMT (UK) »
William Robertson was born about 1827 in Scotland. He married Jean McGregor on the 20 Jun 1851 in Kilmadock. They had twins Thomas and Jean born in 1852 both died the same year. The next born was Thomas born 13 Sept 1853, then Jean born 6 Mar 1855 and then Patrick Murray born on 31  Jan 1857. On the 7 Oct 1857 William, Jean, Thomas, Jean and Patrick departed Liverpool on the Almora and emigrated to Melbourne Victoria Australia.  William died on the 23 Feb 1863 in Ballarat Victoria. Thanks Peter

Without a doubt your best option is to use http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
and try to find them find them in the 1851 or 1861 census, since those will have their birthplaces on them especially with such common names.

Or buy a copy of Williams death certificate in Australia.

Hello Peter, if you look for Jean McGregor on the free Family Search site, the marriage of Jean to William is on there, as well as possible parents for her. If you then go to Scotland's People and take out a small pay as you go subscription, you will be able to view the marriage certificate which may tell you William's occupation and possibly where he was from, or who he worked for. Maybe give you some more clues to follow.

Do you have the entry on the ship's passenger list? You seem to have a fair bit of info about their immigration.

Its just a possibility but it might come in handy later. You need to find him in 1851 with his wife. That's the best way of getting his place of birth. I'm afraid I don't have access to Scotland's People but perhaps someone else will be able to help out.

Hi all ,

Quote
He married Jean McGregor on the 20 Jun 1851 in Kilmadock.

Statutory Registration started in Scotland in 1855 , before that there was the Old Parish Registers(OPR's).
Unfortunately it's highly unlikely that the parents will be named on the OPR.

Added-
If they left for Australia in 1857 they wont be on the 1861 Census.
http://www.freecen.org.uk/ has the 1841 and 1851 Census for Perthshire but it's not complete.

The 1851 Census was taken on the 30th of March so before the marriage(or Banns) in June.

SP is a free to join Pay-per-View sight which can be used (free) with names/dates/areas to narrow down searches but all views for BMD's are payable  :(

Jean born 6 Mar 1855

If you have not done so already it might be worth downloading this birth certificate.
Extra information was included on 1855 BMD's but not in the following years.
