The children could be Caroline's from an earlier marriage.  There is a marriage between Caroline Tillyer & Samuel Hunt 28 Oct 1845: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NK66-MXK

The marriage was registered in Staines, Oct-Dec quarter 1845, Volume 3, Page 321
MORGAN: Glamorgan, Durham, Ohio. DAVIS/DAVIES/DAVID: Glamorgan, Ohio.  GIBSON: Leicestershire, Durham, North Yorkshire.  RAIN/RAINE: Cumberland.  TAYLOR: North Yorks. BOURDAS: North Yorks. JEFFREYS: Worcestershire & Northumberland. FORBES: Berwickshire, CHEESMOND: Durham/Northumberland. WINTER: Durham/Northumberland. SNOWBALL: Durham.

That could be right! I'll look into it. Staines would be the right registration district.
On her marriage certificate to John Williamson, Caroline is listed as a "spinster".. Not a widow.
She could have divorced though?
Thanks for the hint. I will do some searching.

The Caroline who married Samuel Hunt was the daughter of Richard Blount Tillyer a farmer.  They married in Harmondsworth

Ah... Thanks Rosie99.

Does anyone know if it was common to have children outside of marriage in the 1840s/1850s. Or at least widely accepted?

I suppose it's possible that the children aren't either of the parents and are maybe relatives' children who they took in as their own?

Yes it was common to have children outside marriage.  They could also have been a relatives as you suggested.

Thanks Rosie.

If I could just find Caroline on the 1851 census it might clear a few things up.
The problem is, her surname Tillyer is spelled several different ways on different census and birth documents
Sometimes Tillier. Sometimes totally different

The 1851 for George age 8 bn Bedfont does not give a middle name, do you have a record showing that somewhere else.
