Canavan/McDonald Hannahstown 1849
« on: Friday 20 March 15 13:56 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I am trying to trace my family in Ireland, Charles Canavan married Agnes (Nancy) McDonald in 1849 Hannahstown, they were RC.  They had one child Agnes in Ireland and their other children were born in Scotland, which is why I know when and where they were married.

I cannot find any trace of them in Ireland, how can I order a marriage cert?

Any ideas gratefully received  ???

Hi,
This was easy.............
They married in LISBURN County Antrim on the 29th June 1851
It says McDonnell but they wrote how it sounded.
Information, Agnes was anon Catholic.
Rev Henry Olaughlin  Rev John McGraham  were the witnesses.
This is the only Charles Canavan marriage to an Agnes.

Hi again
Ellen was Baptised 10th Jan 1852.
More than likely that was also her Birth date, you were Baptised almost straight away then.
Sponsors were Richard and Elizabeth Boyd.

Just in case you haven't see this yet (Agnes & Nancy are different forms of the same name- just like McDonald & McDonnell would be the same name)-

Nancy MacDonald, wife of Charles Canavan, died at 1 Cartsburn Street, Greenock on 3rd June 1895. (Greenock Telegraph 4.6.1895)

Hello All, and thank you sooo much,

Maggsie you are a superstar, it is the correct family, Boyd was Charles's mum's maiden name.  I have looked and looked, but being more used to the Scottish sites, I just could not find them.

I am wondering why the child is called Ellen, I have her as Agnes in the 1861 census onwards.  I only thought they were married in Hannahstown as it said it on their second daughters birth cert in 1855 Greenock.  Is it possible to order a cert in Ireland this old?.

Aghadowey, I did have those details, thank you.

You can only order a certificate for marriages that took place after the start of civil registration- 1864 for Catholic marriages and 1845 for non-Catholic ones. For earlier dates then a church record is all that is available.

Maggsie didn't give the place of that marriage record but since civil certificates do not list religious affliiation of bride or groom then it likely took place in a Catholic church.
