David Surry - Maldon
« on: Friday 20 March 15 15:06 GMT (UK) »
I have hit a brick wall trying to trace the baptism/marriage/burial of my 4x Great Grandfather David Surry.

My 3x Great Grandfather James Surry was baptised at St. Mary the Virgin Church, Maldon on 3 April 1799. His parents are shown as David Surry (a private in the Essex Militia) and his wife Jane.

I cannot find any further reference to David or Jane Surry in the Maldon parish registers.

I found the Surry surname mentioned several times in Tolleshunt Major and Tollesbury both parishes close to Maldon but not a David Surry.

Does anyone know if the soldiers in the Essex Militia remained local to where they were from or could they be from anywhere in Essex but stationed in Maldon?

I have been to the Essex Record Office but they only have details of officers in the militia.

James Surry ended up in Ipswich, Suffolk a shoemaker and his surname is sometimes spelt Surrey.

Any help, advice or information as to where I could check next would be most appreciated.
Many thanks, Demarchye.

Thanks Mark.

I'll check that out and see if I can connect him to my David Surry.
