Looking for Mildred
« on: Friday 20 March 15 15:41 GMT (UK) »
Floyd William Chapman was born 20 February 1885 in Moundville, Marquette County, Wisconsin [parents:  Cecil John Chapman and Ann Elizabeth Brown].  In 1910, he was still single and living in Moundville.  By 1918, he was living in Brown's Valley, Traverse County, Minnesota with his wife, Mildred.  Although he lived in Minnesota, he was employed by a fishing company located on the west side of the Little Minnesota River in South Dakota.  It seems likely, then, that his marriage occurred in Wisconsin, Minnesota or South Dakota.  So far, though, I cannot find a record of the marriage or even a plausible Mildred.  Who was she?

In later censuses [1920, 30, 40], Mildred is described as a naturalized citizen, born in Russia [or Germany] in 1887/88, parents born in Russia [or Germany], immigrated in 1889/1890, native Russian speaker.  I am guessing that she was born in Russia to ethnic Germans and had a German surname, but that's just a guess.

Floyd and Mildred had one daughter born in about 1927 in Minnesota.  Floyd died in 1958 and is buried in the cemetery in Moundville.  I believe that Mildred probably died in 1974  - there is a convincing SSDI record for a Mildred Chapman, b. 1887, recorded in Portage, Wisconsin.

1925 South Dakota State Census:
States they were married in 1912, have lived in South Dakota 7 years, so they moved there about 1918 from Minnesota
Mildred maiden name is Wuerch, also on the state census.

The 1900 Wisconsin census for Packwaukee, has a possible connection.

August Wuerch age 36 married 16 years born Russia, emigrated 1889
Louisa              age 33                          born Russia  (4/4 children)
Lidia age 15 born Russia
Millie age 13 born Russia
Elsie age 10 born Wisconsin
Otto age 8 born Wisconsin

The date of emigration matches and so does the name

Daughter's birth can be seen here (mmn listed as "Wuench", probably just n/r confusion)

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MPVD-H5B
 - 1910 has her as "Amelia", still with the family in Wisconsin.

You could try Wisconsin - you would have to ask them for a search:
https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/vitalrecords/index.htm
(I do not think there are any online indexes for this time period -  there are some for pre-1907 records and you can pick up some references to siblings here: http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/Content.aspx?dsNav=N:1220 )
