NZGS Marriage CD - referenced from where?
« on: Sunday 22 March 15 08:08 GMT (UK) »
Just wondering if anyone knows where the NZGS Marriage CD is referenced from?

I have marriage indexed on it that doesn't appear on the BDM online registry or BDM microfiche. It's a Marriage from 1853 for Antony SMITH and Margaret SYMONS. So trying to hunt down where the record came from if not those.

Any help much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi and welcome to Rootschat Mel!

You might like to try this link!

There's one showing from 1836 to 1956

Cheers

Hi Jeanne,

Thanks for the reply. I have the CD already and found a marriage indexed on the CD that isn't recorded anywhere else.
Trying to track down where the NZGS got the record from so I can find the original record which hopefully has more info

Thanks

Ok, yep, see what you mean!  I'd actually go to the website anyway, and enquire directly from NZSG.

The NZSG Marriages CD was compiled from the original reference numbers that were on the microfiched indexes to the marriage registers held at the RGO office in Lower Hutt, following on from the Matching Brides and Grooms project started by the NZSG. This was done some years ago long before the BMD website came into being, which was set up using a completely different set of references.

Previously when searching through the microfiched indexes the brides and grooms names were separately indexed under their surname. If you knew one but not the other you had to search through until you found the matching number. Very time consuming hence the Matching Brides and Grooms Project.

NZSG did have access to the original registers where required to make sure they had everything covered, so not sure why it would not show up on the BMD website as they supposedly indexed that from the registers.

Although it could be because marriages did not have to be recorded until 1854, and so may have come from a church record held by the NZSG.

Hi .. you probably have realised but just in case not .. BDM have quite a few transcription errors and because you can only search on the surname sometimes you can't find records. My ancestor had her death transcribed as Whito instead of White - it was very difficult to get BDM to change it .... :(

It would be worth contacting BDM's and asking them to check for you

I did try contacting BDM, they couldn't find any match with the information I have. They suggested finding the location and date of the marriage. So I contacted the library and a very helpful researcher had a look and they also found the marriage on the NZGS CD but couldn't find it on the BDM microfiche.
So maybe it did come from a church record (mentioned above) or maybe it was registered in a district only and not on the general?

I also tried various spellings, and Ancestry is good for finding spelling variations but still nothing
