MARRIAGE-1845-CORK
« on: Sunday 22 March 15 15:52 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone!

Please could someone tell me how to obtain the marriage certificate of Henry Raymond and Anna Lennon 1845 in Cork? (I'm in England.) I've tried the Irish GRO website, but it won't let me. I've also been to the National Archives and the London Family History Centre there to see if I can view it on a parish register, but they didn't have the microfilm or fiche there either for me to see. I really need this marriage certificate, as I am having problems tracing their parents. (Henry is from England, there are many Anna Lennon's born in the same place and time, so the certificate is needed to verify which one she is.)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  :)

Civil registration of Catholic marriages began in 1864 (non-Catholic from 1845) so if you can't find the couple listed in the civil registration index then it's likely to hav been a Catholic ceremony and the only record will be one from the church.

Henry Raymond 1845 Cork volume 4, page 293

Anna Lennon on same page

Extracted record doesn't list fathers so may not be on the certificate (as was quite common in early years of regstration)

Irish marriage certificates only list the fathers' names and occupations. See here for details on marriage certificates-

See here for ordering certificate- the 1st post has the details you need to read-

Hello,

Did you try here, with the reference?

Cork 1845 volume 4 pg 293

A photocopy of the register is 4 euros but you have to apply by post as I recall.

Sorry - duplicated.

Thank you to both of you.

The website doesn't let you order marriages that far back.

Thank you, I will try and see if the link helps me in any way :)

You can order the certificate from GRO, Roscommon. Have you looked at these bits of that 1st post?

You can attach a separate sheet of paper with the references mentioned above. Make sure to mention that you require 'Research Certs'. Once you give the correct references, each cert should only cost €4.

(Important Note - the online HSE service mentioned on the GRO website is designed for more recent certs, and only covers restricted dates, and doesn't provide the facility to specify the BMD Index details )

Yes I have, thank you very much!

So I just fill the form in and send off, and they should come back to me with a copy of the certificate or parish register? Will they be the same?

Civil registration (birth, marriage and death certificates) are entirely separate from church records. The GRO will only have civil records so what you will get is the marriage certificate (may be a Registry Office or non-Catholic church in this instance). The information on the certificate follows a standardised form (see earlier link to details included).

The information found in church records vary according to denomination, period and clergyman.

Thank you very much again. Hopefully it might come back saying the father's names if I order just the BMD certificate! It's strange, seeing as the marriage certificates I've ordered for England seem to be the same as the ones in the parish registers. I guess it's different for Ireland. I'll try and order it and see what happens! Thanks for all your help. I'll let you know when it arrives :)

The church will have a copy of the marriage and returns would have been sent periodically to the GRO.
