I just phoned a cousin who was a Swindon copper, they have to know that sort of information. No answer, he must be out walking the dog. e-mailed him so see what he says by tomorrow morning.

I googled it, nothing came up. Should have been estate agents adverts for sale. It may have been renamed. I guess it should have been in or near Gorse Hill or Roughmoor. Some areas have been redeveloped but most of 100 year old Swindon is still here.

Gorse Hill was "moved" over to Swindon in 1890

Thank you every one for your replies.

G-gfather worked at the railways, so the location seems to tally. Am wondering if the street was re-named, or the buildings demolished, but other than in the census, I can't seem to find reference to the street at all!

I don't think it's a street at all!
Just a terrace of houses on Cricklade Road? ;D

I have lived in 3 such terraces in my adult life!! :D

On the national library Scotland site you have the ability to put the old map side by side with any modern map or  satelite view. As you zoom in on the old map the modern image follows automatically.
Most of that which I can see on the old map in Cricklade Rd now called Cricklade St seems to be still there, although extended and modernised.

Huh huh, Cricklade Road goes all the way to Cricklade. Because of the name North End, I am presuming it was the north western end corner of Swindon (and still is). Not necessarily so, there are villages in between. I will wait to see what my cousin says by tomorrow morning.

I thought we had already said that Cricklade Street and Cricklade Road are not the same?! ;D

Cricklade Street is (approx) at SN1 3HG. In Swindon Old Town, next to Lawns Park.

Cricklade Road is north of the town centre, starting (now) at Transfer Bridges at the main railway line, Goes past the Duke of Edinburgh pub (SN2 1AE) and running through Penhill, and out to meet up with Thamesdown Drive and the A419

With the two maps side by side it is absolutely clear that Cricklade Rd in the late 1800s is now Cricklade St.,,the large church is the clue.

Thanks everyone for your help and replies. I'm having a few problems trying to contact the Wiltshire OPC, as suggested, but will try again this weekend.
