FindMyPast burials - How old was he?
« on: Friday 27 March 15 16:30 GMT (UK) »
Can FindMyPast subscribers help me here please? George Chapple was buried 16 September 1837 in West Buckland, Devon. His burial record is shown on FindMyPast with his age transcribed as 63. However looking at other 3s and 8s written by the same curate on that page it looks more like 68 to me.

What do you think?

I agree 68. The 3s have far less complication to their writing, the 8s a continuous double curve and the left pointing end of bottom curve is distinctively different in 3s & 8s.

Thank you for looking Josey and agreeing with me but the 8th January entry you seem to be comparing it to is by another curate.

I see a continuous downward curve in the 8s of curate Stracy's writing but a more distinct in and out on the right side of his 3s. George's entry seems to me to have the continuous downward curve suggesting an 8 but when I showed it to a friend she was adamant it was a 3 because the bottom wasn't joined up and it did have a distinct in and out on the right. Obviously it's not so clear cut so I decided to get more opinions.

Whoops didn't look at the curate's name.

To me the writing action of George's 8 starts on the middle, curves to the right & over the top then down 'SEwards' the curves left & up [doesn't join up]. The 3s start at top left. I think today most RH people start & finish an 8 at top middle

Yes that's how I see it too. Thanks. That's one for me  :D

Now does anyone see a 3, I wonder?

Don't know if this helps or not but here is a 3 and an 8 in the same entry by Stracy.

Which do you think it is sami?

The 3 of the date 1837 at the top of the page complicates matters because it looks similar to the figure I'm trying to identify, don't you think?

Good question - my first thought was 68 but it could be 63. I go back and forth between the two ages  :P

Have you found his baptism? That could help.

Well there are several baptisms to choose from so I was hoping his age at burial might help. I know this can't always be relied on but it's all I've got.

So I would be really grateful for all opinions please. Have a look. Is it 63 or 68?
