Can anyone advise me or direct me onto the right road for I am trying to find out why my wifes grandfather (who was in the Royal Navy) had an Alias,on an official Naval document (of which I downloaded a copy) he had his birth name and dob and also an Alias and dob,is there anyway that I can find out why this was he had an Alias until he came out of the Navy in the early 1900s when he reverted back to he birth name.

Discovering why people used aliases will be difficult if it is not stated on his record. It may be because he had been turned down before and reapplied under an assumed name. But you will never really know.
