Nellie Harding - really Eleanor?
« on: Thursday 02 April 15 10:31 BST (UK) »
I have in my family tree Nellie Harding. She married Charles Owen in Birmingham in 1903. She appears in the 1911 census living with her husband Charles Owen and their children. Estimated birth year is 1886 in Birmingham.

She appears as Nellie on both the marriage register and the 1911 census. She also appears as Nellie in the electoral roll records for the following years - 1920, 1922, 1925, 1927 and 1930.

I am having great difficulty in finding her birth record, parentage and her life in census prior to marriage. I also can't find her death.

This leads me to believe that perhaps Nellie was a nickname. I've heard that Nellie is short for Eleanor so I looked for an Eleanor Harding and found 2 census records for 1891 and 1901 of an Eleanor Harding living with parents Joseph and Fanny Harding in Birmingham. Could this be my Nellie?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I should add, though it may not be relevant, that her husband is always listed as Charles Owen. He is only listed as Charles Henry Owen on his son, Charles Henry Owen's, marriage certificate (he was deceased at the time).

Could it be helen rather than Eleanor? I have a Helen who is sometimes Nellie and sometimes Nell.

I would agree with Trish,  the marriage certificate would confirm who the father was.

Nellie is also more  commonly used for Ellen as well as Eleanor and Helen. As has already been said, you need the marriage certificate for her father's name and occupation before you can progress with any certainty.
