Sturkey Family - Tregynon
« on: Thursday 02 April 15 13:40 BST (UK) »
I am new to Rootschat and I have discovered that I may be a descendant of Dr Roger HD Sturkey of Tregynon through my paternal grandmother.  I believe her mother Jane Lewis was the daughter of Christopher Lewis of Llanfair and Mary Eliza Sturkey who was the daughter of Dr. Sturkey and Mary Eliza nee Hudson.  Can anyone help or confirm this for me please?

It must have caused a stir at the time as Christopher was a carpenter/joiner and Mary Eliza the daughter of an eminiment medical practitioner.

Thanks for the replies regarding the above.  I am quite new to family history so am very grateful for any help.

Does anyone know why the Sturkey's came to live in Tregynon?  Sturkey does not sound a very Welsh name.  Also I am assuming many of them would be buried in Tregynon church.  I would hope to make a trip and find out one day.

Roger Hudson Devereux Sturkey, Bachelor of this parish  to
Mary Eliza Harrison, minor of the parish of Chertsey, Surrey

Married by Licence, with the consent of Thomas Harrison, father

According to the 1851 census, RHD was born in Deptford?
Class: HO107; Piece: 2497; Folio: 402; Page: 8
Fachwen, Aberhaley, Montgomeryshire

Sturkey, R H D  Head  Widower  M  60  Surgeon  b Deptford, Kent
Sturkey, Robert Owen  Son  M  17  b London
Sturkey, Luiza  Daughter  F  15  b Tregynon
Sturkey, Frederick  Son  M  11  Scholar  b Tregynon
Sturkey, Edwin  Son  M  9  b Tregynon
Sturkey, Catharine  Sister  F  68  b Tregynon

So, if Catharine was born in Tregynon, it looks like the Sturkey family came from there?

My Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen,

To you, my professional and private friends, I feel more particularly indebted; for to you, I feel it is my duty to state, I attribute my Success.
I beg to assure you, that no exertion shall be wanting on my part towards faithfully discharging the duties of the official situation to which you have so recently elected me.
