Seeking details of parents for Jacob Whitfield, Born 1877 in Lanchester, Co Durham.  Later (1916) married Janet Stephenson Murphy in  Lanchester.

Do you have Jacob in any census? Looking at the 1881 census there are a couple of possibilities - have you identified any of them as being your Jacob?

Do you have his father's name from his marriage certificate? That would be my first port of call.

I found a Jacob Whitfield registered Dec. Qtr. 1877 Lanchester Registration Area. I found a Jacob Whitfield in the Lanchester Registration Area marrying a Janet Murphy, 1916. That means he was 39 years old when he married.

I could not find either parties to the marriage in the Lanchester Registration Area between 1877 and 1916. Bearing in mind that we are looking at a Registration Area not the village of Lanchester. They could have been from as far away as Tanfield for all we know.

All I know about Jacob Whitfield is that his birth is registered in. That is everything I know and I am trying to find his parentage.  I appreciate all your comments to date.

In that case I think the best next step would be for you to purchase that birth certificate. When you know both of his parent's names you will be able to trace him and them through the censuses.

There is a Jacob Whitfield in Lanchester in the census that can't be mentioned. He can be traced back through earlier census to being born in Winlaton in 1870.
Are you sure the Jacob Whitfield b. 1877 is the one who marries Janet Murphy? Janet appears to be a widow, formerly Janet Stephenson. Two brides names on Durham Registrars site confirms this, and there are Whitfield children after the marriage with mothers maiden name Stephenson. Also Murphy children prior to the 1916 marriage with maiden name Stephenson. Janets first husband was David Murphy.
I'd be inclined to get the 1916 marriage cert to confirm Jacobs age and fathers name.
