Heaton Lodge/Lodge Court Heaton Mersey
« on: Friday 03 April 15 10:37 BST (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help me/point me into the right direction.  I am very interested in finding out more about the estate/house that used to stand on the new estate where I grew up.  The present name is Lodge Court, Heaton Mersey which is at the junction of Didsbury Road and Mauldeth Road.  The original house was named Heaton Lodge and I have managed to find an old image which has it listed

Any pointers would be great.  Thank you

Perhaps Stockport Local Heritage Library, Wellington Road South  :-\

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Your first option should be to google the "Stockport Image Archive". Searching for Didsbury Road throws up a hundred or so thumbnails but, not untypically in my experience, clicking on them on my iPad simply delivers an error message. I doubt whether asking the local heritage library would get you much further.

The map Stan refers you to is probably the earliest available of any use. I do have one which may be earlier but it is much less detailed.

Lodge Court was built during the 1970s but the flats and houses to the rear were built 25+ years ago and considrable efforts were put into retaining the ornamental ponds originally within the garden of Heaton Lodge to avoid flooding the gardens of houses further down the hill to the rear.

I'm not sure whether there is any further info. in the pictoral guide to the Heatons but, if I can find it, I'll have a look.

Perhaps you should ditch your iPad, as no problem on my laptop.

Funny I found these maps this morning looking for the same. It was occupied by a John Marsland at this point. I found some extra information saying it was built around 1820 and John Marsland owned several mills around Manchester.
We lived at 18 from 1968 and I remember playing around the 2 ponds you can see. There was an old big brick greenhouse with grape vines.

There is a book available to read on
www.archives.org
that you might find interesting.
I put Heaton Norris in the search box. From about page 183 Heaton Mersey area was mentioned.

A history of the ancient chapels of Didsbury and Chorlton, in Manchester parish, including sketches of the townships of Didsbury, Withington, Burnage, Heaton Norris, Reddish, Levenshulme, and Chorlton-cum-Hardy: together with notices of the more ancient local families, and particulars relating to the descent of their estates (1857)
