Information on death certificates
« on: Monday 06 April 15 06:42 BST (UK) »
Hi can anyone tell me what information there will be on a death certificate of 1955 and one of 1988.
In the first instance need to know if the man is born in Scotland and if he had any living children at death. Second one would there be any "hint" of where she lived between 1910 when she "disappeared" with her Dad (1955 death) and her death in 1988. Thanks so much.

Information on English death certificate:

Registration Distric
Date and place of death
Name and surname
Sex
Maiden name
Date and place of birth
Occupation and usual address
Name of informant
Qualification (of information)
Usual address (of informant)
Cause of death

1955 death certificate will only indicate:
When and where died
Name
Sex
Age
Occupation
Cause of death
Name, description and residence of informant
When registered

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

Hi

A death certificate for 1955 does not have date and place of birth,

Andy

This is the official link:

And always remember that the information is only as good as the knowledge that the informant gives.

And, no, they are not life histories.

Have you checked whether either of them left wills, the probate list may give information that could help

Thanks Rosie will check that out.

And Chempat I understand about certificates I just wanted to know what is on them in UK for the more "modern" ones I have as all my DC from UK are back in the 1800's to early 1900's. I know in NZ (subject to what the informant knows) we have heaps of information gathered.

Hi Glenda

Death certificates issued after June 1/4 1969 contain more information, such as date and place of birth and maiden surnames for married women.

Cheers all, Rosie's hint on wills led me to be able to eliminate one person but your info Dawnsh will be great for the 1988 certificate I need. Thanks for all the help. Glenda
