Hurst and Blackett Publishers
« on: Tuesday 07 April 15 00:24 BST (UK) »
One of my family members Daniel William Stow Hurst was a senior partner for this company.  According to what I can find, a William Hurst born abt 1766 and a John Blackett founded this company.
Now I have Daniel William Stow Hurst born 1802 Middlesex, father Samuel mother Martha.  Just wondering how on earth does William born 1766 fit into the family?  Was he a uncle to Daniel?
I had came to a brick wall with Samuel born abt 1757, there must be some family connection for Daniel to be senior partner, he left over 15,000 pounds in his will in 1870.
So I would love to know who was William Hurst born abt 1766 and how do they all connect?

I can find no references to the firm of Hurst and Blackett before January 1853, when they announced that they were the successors to Henry Colburn.

Per the Longman Companion to Victorian Fiction,  the firm was founded by Daniel Hurst and Henry Blackett  in succession to Henry Colburn.

Interesting that Henry Colburn was with Daniel Hurst and family in the 1841 census.

Colburn's United Service Magazine is advertised in 1846 (Daily News, January 21)  by H Hurst, 27 King William Street. This is the publishing firm of Henry Hurst which became H Hurst & Co around January 1849, and seems to have disappeared by 1850.

Daniel Hurst's business address in 1847 was in King William Street per the Gazette https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/20786/page/3850/data.pdf.

So who was Henry? Is that Daniel's son perhaps?

Thank you so much.

I was unable to find the 1841 census but have 1851 and 61.  I think Daniel and Lavinia only had one child and she was named Lavinia after her mother.

Daniels will left the bulk of his money to his daughter Lavinia, it was contested by her son Mr Young, needless to say he lost.

I did a google search and it was a site about Blackett and Hurst, but I think they may of got it wrong saying this below

(Hurst and Blackett, a London publishing house, was founded in 1812 by John Blackett (1785-1832) and (probably) William Hurst, born about 1766. John Blackett descended from the Northumberland Blacketts was the son of another John Blackett (1757-1831)

No Henry Hurst in the family.  I know Daniels father married twice, and there are 15 children between the two marriages, no Henry.

Thanks again

Henry William Hurst was the only son of D.W.S. Hurst, publisher, per death notices in Sheffield newspapers in December 1877. They say that HWH died at Lorrimore Square London on Dec 6th 1877.

Henry was baptised at St Mary's Lambeth on 1 July 1825. Parents named as Daniel William Stowe Hurst, clerk in an office, and Lavinia Sarah Hurst.

Oh most interesting, so there is another child Henry.  I wonder what happened to him as he was never left anything in the will?
Thanks again.

As I read a report of the case, the will was contested by Daniel's widow on the grounds of undue influences and fraud on the part of David Young who had married Daniel's daughter Lavinia. It  mentions that the son (presumably Henry) had been disinherited.
