Johnston family from Edinburgh 1826 to 1841
« on: Tuesday 07 April 15 19:27 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for any birth or baptismal records for the children of David Johnston an earthenware dealer born Muirkirk 1805 married to Agnes Langwill born 1810 Campbeltown
The children's names are Janet born circa 1832,Thomas Craig born c 1834,Isabella born c 1836,Mary born c 1838  They were all said to have been born in Edinburgh according to later censuses There was also another child Agnes born Glasgow 1840? So far haven't found a single record for them Thanks Josie46

Hello Annie
In the records in Edinburgh the only one I found for the marriage of David Johnston an earthenware dealer to Agnes Long was on 27th July 1829 in College Parish St Cuthberts Church Edinburgh which I am certain is theirs except for her surname which was Longwill or Langwill depending on who spelled it and it ties in with later children's marriages that he was an earthen or stoneware dealer in Edinburgh in the Canongate and also her father Peter Langwill or Longwill was Governor of Edinburgh Bridewell Prison at that time . Later censuses in Glasgow show David as working in the Glasgow Bridewell Prison as a watchman in 1841 then in 51 he seems to be separated from his wife and is in lodgings in Glasgow Gallowgate and Agnes in Bridgeton  just a wee bit further along the road. I know they were both Protestant from other records so I suppose she either gave a shortened version of her name or they wrote it down wrongly. She was born in Campbeltown
Regards Josie

Josie,

I have scoured everywhere but can't find anything for the births/baptisms of Janet, Thomas Craig, Isabella nor Mary b Edinburgh  :-\

Sorry……..only 2 births I could find with any similarity was:

Janet Johnston b1830 Edinburgh to (a) David Johnston & Helen Scott (Place & Date fit)

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XT5N-Z9Z

Thomas b1834 Edinburgh to (a) David Johnston & Jane Miller (Place & Date fit)

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XT5N-TLR

David & Jane had a Mary Ann b1832 & Johanna b1835 (she would be c Isabella’s birth date)

I’m like you………..at a loss  ::)

It's possible the "M" may have looked like a "W"  ???

A look at the original would clarify  :P

Can't figure the change of name though  :-\  ???  ::)

Annie

ADDED...........Unless her middle name was Isabella ?
