Ancestors of Alice Burgess Brown, b. Fatfield, County Durham, !908
« on: Friday 10 April 15 19:56 BST (UK) »

I would very grateful for some information on the ancestors of Alice Burgess Brown, who was born in Fatfield, County Durham, 1908, to Isabella (b. Humphrey), and William Brown. All possibly from the same area.

This is all I know about them:

Alice married Charles Tomkins of Lubenham, Leics, in 1937.
William Brown died age 29.
Isabella then married a Mr Dodds.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Leics.              Harris
Northants.      Day, Faulkner, Gammage, Swingler
Suffolk            Nice, Plant, Soanes

Have you identified and applied for the marriages of Isabella?

Do you have access to the 1911 census to find Alice there?

If you are looking for her ancestry - you already have her parents names so can then work backwards using that info.

As Chempat says - start by finding them on the 1911 census which will give you her parents ages and birthplaces and also how long they had been married

Use freebmd to find their marriage  www.freebmd.org.uk

If they were born before 1881 - the 1881 census is free to search here

Think the marriage was in 1900 - showing on free bmd.

Added:
If you know she married Mr Dodds, have you got a death for her?

The Isabella Brown marriage to Dodds can easily be found on free bmd (Chester-le-Street, 1915)

Added:
Unless it is Morpeth in 1911 (!) - but probably not.

1841 census DUR
Hylton
Wm Humphrey 30 N[ot born in county] P?
Mary 25 Y[es  born in county]
Taylor 10 months Y

You might need Taylor Humphrey’s birth certificate to sort out his mother’s name, as there are a lot of brides called Mary in the likely options for the marriage of William Humphrey around 1840.

The following seems to relate to the father of William Humphrey, as William’s brother (yet another Taylor Humphrey) survives to marry in Newburn in 1840 (see www.freeref.org.uk), and does not seem to have been a keelman:

On Friday evening an inquest was held in this town…on the body of Taylor Humphrey, a keelman in the employment of Joseph Lamb Esq, who was thrown overboard from his keel, when near St ANthony’s the same morning. His body was found abt 200 yards from the place where the accident occurred. Verdict - Accidental Death
Newcastle Journal, 7 December 1833

Newburn, Northumberland, St Michael and All Angels born 19 March 1806 & bap 31 July 1808 3rd son of Taylor Humphrey & wife Mary Prudhoe, Newburn Hall, Keelman. Father from Ovingham parish & mother from Whickham parish [source www.freereg.org.uk - transcribed from the Bishop’s Transcripts]

5 June 1802 Taylor Humphrey, Bachelor, Newburn married Mary Prudhoe, Newburn, Spinster by Banns
Marriages, St Michael’s & All ANgels, Newburn [transcribed from the BTs by www.freereg.org.uk]

You can see images of the Bishop’s Transcripts for many parishes in the Diocese of Durham (which included most of Northumberland) on www.familysearch.org - these are unindexed and so you scan through them as you would a film. However, if the corresponding parish registers have been indexed on another part of familysearch.org you can use these index entries to help you navigate through the Bishop’s Transcripts. You will be able to pick up other members of the families mentioned above.

OK, have run out of time & have to dash, but William's family looks to have some distinctive names & occupations so that may offset the common name & hopefully you will be able to trace them further back.

Many thanks to you all for so much help, especially Selden. I am short of time this week but will take this up again shortly. I am doing this for my cousin, Sheila Heeney b. Tomkins, who is Alice's daughter. I know she will be thrilled with your information.

Best wishes,

Rosemarie
