Who adopted Mary Letitia Horn-Beatty (born Madras, India 1883)?
« on: Wednesday 15 April 15 10:59 BST (UK) »
I need some help finding records of arrival and departure of (Mary) Letitia Horn(e) or Horn-Beatty from India to New Zealand and then to England via South Africa after 1889 and before 1911 in order to find out who adopted her.
Working backwards this is what I know about her so far:

At the birth of her first son (1915) in Nairobi, Letty Morgan's maiden name is recorded as Horn-Beatty - though some people have transcribed it as Hera-Beatty.
A Laetitia Horn-Beatty (28) is a music mistress in Scarborough Yorkshire in 1911 census (born Madras).
A Mary Letitia Horn-Beatty took out a patent for an improved mechanism for rising and falling music stools in 1909.
Family history relates that she was orphaned and brought up by a vicar and his wife in India. After the vicar died her adoptive mother took her to New Zealand.  As a young woman she went from New Zealand to England to study music at the Royal Academy.  They stopped in South Africa where she met her future husband (probably in or before 1905).  She travelled to East Africa sometime after the English 1911 census and before 1914 to marry Thomas Oliver Morgan.

Horn(e)-Beatty as a doubled-barreled name appears to be unique to her.  She doesn't appear to come from a family of Horn-Beattys.  Therefore I suspect one name was probably her birth family name and the other her adopted family name.
Madras birth record - Mary Letitia Horne born to William Henry Horne (Harbour master) and his wife Elizabeth 1883.
3 years later (1886) William Henry Horne is a 39 year old widower marrying a Harriet Chloe Gibson Yarde in Madras - occupation Senior Port Pilot, father John Rigby Horn (Horn without an e).  One of the witnesses to this marriage is E T Beatty.  Could this be a Rev. E T Beatty?
3 years later (1889) William Henry Horne dies in Madras.  No evidence for further children before death.  Therefore Mary Letitia Horne orphaned at age 6.  Second wife goes on to remarry in the 1890s and has lots of children but no evidence of Mary Letitia in those family histories online.

There is a Rev E T Beatty in India at this time.  In 1894 he was a chaplain in Madras (Book "The Church in Madras") and in 1886 he was an army chaplain (in Upper Burma) (Book "The Presidential Armies of India").  He was involved in the Army Temperance Movement.  I have found Rev E T Beatty in passenger records travelling between England and India, but not with a wife or child.

So who was Rev E T Beatty, and if he had a wife who was she?
Is there any evidence that Rev E T Beatty is the man who became Mary Letitia Horne's adoptive father?
Is there evidence of Mary Letitia travelling to or from New Zealand. If so, who was she travelling with?
Is there evidence that Mary Letitia Horne born to William Henry Horne in Madras in 1883 is the same person as Mary Letitia Horn-Beatty who married Thomas Oliver Morgan?

6 Feb 1938, Emily Jane Beatty died in the Isle of Wight. Probate to Mary Letitia Morgan, wife of Thomas Oliver Morgan.

Emily J. Beatty and Mary L. Horn appear to be living together in Paddington in 1901 (free index, http://www.1901censusonline.com )

There wouldn't have been a formal adoption as such.

I cannot see the NZ connection. One possibility - I do see a reference to the Rev E. T. Beatty being appointed Chaplain of Wellington in 1897, shortly before his death - not the one in NZ, though!  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellington_Cantonment ). It may be that the family remembered her saying she lived with her adoptive mother in Wellington when she was young and "NZ" got filled in as the most obvious Wellington anybody knew!

Edward Tyrell Beatty by his will appointed his wife Emily Jane Beatty his sole executrix and trustee, and left most of his property to "my adopted daughter commonly known as Mary Letitia Horne-Beatty".  Specific legacies were also left to Emily and to Canadian relatives of his.

He was of St Paul's Clergy House, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk at the time he made his will (24 Apr 1891).

Wow, thanks Sharon01, avm228 and jorose, you've nailed it.  Looks like incontrovertible evidence to me.  I don't think I could have done it by myself.  Many thanks
