Death index look up
« on: Friday 17 April 15 14:46 BST (UK) »
Hello
My first venture into Australian territory  :D

Is it possible to look up a name on a death index and get the age of a person please?

All I have is a suggested record on Australia death index 1787-1985 for "Steph Absalom"

My chap is Stephen born c1825 England and I don't have him after the 1851 census there.

Thank you.

Well we first have to try and establish where in Australia your Stephen ABSALOM was. Unfortunately unlike ENGLAND Australia is made up of States and each has its own records. Do you know any more information at least his parents names and what area/state he was in. Does the Ancestry death Index indicate any more. It is drawn from the various states records, quite often incorrect, does not contain all the information found on those very state records.

The early 1850's saw Gold discovered in Victoria and the numbers of people swelled to hundreds of times what it was in the 1840's. Other States such as NSW, Qld, Tasmania and Sth Australia were also growing rapidly. Are you assuming only because he was not on the 1851 census he must have gone to Australia?

Modified: The main index for Australia's largest populated State NSW is down for maintenance this weekend.

Thanks for replying Neil.

No I'm not assuming anything at all, just trying to follow up a lead.

My Stephen had parents James & Ann nee Weeks.

I don't know how the Australia death index works sorry - all I had was a suggestion as posted

"Australia death index 1787-1985"

I thought if I could find out how old the person on your death index was it might help further.

There is a NSW immigration record for 1855 which might be him.  Arrived on the Rose of Sharon, aged 30, farm labourer, native place Wilcot, Wiltshire, parents James and Anne living at Wilcot, can read and write, no relatives in the colony.  With him is wife Anne aged 27, native place Stowe, Wiltshire, parents Stephen and Elizabeth SMITH, both dead, can read and write, no relatives in the colony.  Child Stephen, infant, native of Pewsey, Wiltshire, parents Stephen and Anne onboard.

Brilliant that is spot on.  He was indeed born Wilcot Wiltshire :D

Thank you so much for all the information.  Who would have thought such a tenuous suggestion to a death in another country would lead to all that I am really pleased  :)
