Mysteriously missing G Grandparents (1911 Scottish Census)
« on: Friday 17 April 15 16:17 BST (UK) »
Can anyone find the following family on the 1911 Scottish census (index)

I know lots about them and have tried a couple of times to find them at a Scotlands People centre and failed miserably  :'( :'( :'( Dad swears that he had an uncle William (complete with occupation and named cousins) but the only William I can find died in infancy. If Dad is correct then I was hoping to see the missing William on the 1911 census so that I at least knew what year to try and find his birth. Either that or not find him and tell Dad his memory isn't what it used to be ;D

What I know:  Denis O'Neill (born ~1864 Ireland) marries Mary Lamont (born ~1866 Ireland) on 28/11/1890 in Glasgow

83 Port Street, Glasgow (Kelvin Registration District)
- 1891 Census (Denis and Mary with no children as expected)
- birth Sarah 25/08/1891
- birth Dennis 02/12/1892
- death Dennis 14/07/1893
- birth William 14/04/1894
- death William 08/05/1894
31 Dover Street, Glasgow (Kelvin District)
- 1895 Valuation roll (couldn't find them at either Port St or Dover St)
- birth Mary Helen 02/09/1895
13 Pembroke Street, Glasgow (Kelvin District)
- birth Fanny 26/08/1897
- death Fanny 27/08/1898
- birth Margaret 06/06/1899
- birth Thomas 24/02/1901
- 1901 Census (with parents, Sarah, Mary Helen, Margaret and Thomas as expected)
- birth Frances 27/09/1903
- 1905 Valuation roll under father Denis O'Neil
- birth Denis 26/12/1905 (my grandfather :D)
116 Elderslie Street, Glasgow (Anderston Registration District)
- 1915 Valuation roll under Denis O'Neil
- 1920 Valuation roll under Denis O'Neil
- death Denis senior 17/09/1928

They don't seem to move around a lot so I thought finding them on the 1911 census would be easy. I can find individuals that match but as soon as I put in one of the children/spouse to check I might have the correct entry it doesn't match. Technically possible they were in Ireland or England around census time but I didn't find anything there either.

I am hoping that they have simply been mistranscribed as something weird that I can't think of. Help!

Sadly SP is the only way to check 1911.

Have you tried searching births within the timescale you have, in the Glasgow & Glasgow City areas with surname only & "soundex"  ???

Depending on his job he may have moved over the border of Glasgow district to any of the neighbouring areas for work  :-\

Hi Ev,

That looks hopeful!!! I don't think I can have searched that way, I think I must have kept in the "o'" bit for the surname and it wasn't working. I know I have a blind spot for some of the variations though.

Now do I spend some of my free credits checking that or do I wait till I visit the Mitchell Library tomorrow....

Hi Ammack,

Yup sadly I do know SP is the only option and checking in person at one the the SP centres wasn't helping either. I tried births but didn't haven any luck last time I tried. Denis seems to have worked around the docks so I don't think he will have moved far.

If Ev's find is correct I will have a lot more to look at tomorrow  ;D

Yes !!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D You are a  star Ev  ;D

I gave in and checked and that is them with no doubt at all - at 13 Pembroke Street with all the expected children plus an extra William and Kathleen. "Denis O'Neill" has been transcribed as "Denis Q. Neil"

And the sister "Kitty" that is mentioned in the family isn't Mary Helen or Margaret (which never did make sense) but obviously Kathleen.

Sorry, although not relevant now, I should have been more specific....................by "border of Glasgow" I meant Lanark/Renfrew/Dunbarton...............NOT England  ;D

No problem ammack - I knew what you meant :) It was just that when I checked all the street names on the map they are within a block of each other (and the Mitchell library as it happens) so I didn't think he would have moved even that far.

Unlike my Dundee Nicholson's who were in the Newcastle area between the 1881 and 1891 censuses but Dundee for the censuses themselves ::) 3 English births to sort out the "missing" people I couldn't find in Scotland.
