William Wiltshire born West Challow
« on: Monday 27 April 15 13:42 BST (UK) »
On the 1841 census William Wiltshire Ag Lab age 70 is living with Harriet Wiltshire age 8 and James Wiltshire age 4 in West Lockinge, Berks. All born in county. Looking at ages my first thought was that Harriet and James were William's grandchildren.
But in 1851 William Wiltshere age 82 is with Harriet now 17 and James 13 and they are listed as daughter and son. William was born in East Challow. I have William married to Elizabeth Miles in 1794 and having 6 children between then and 1816. The only way it is possible to have two much younger children is if he married again to a younger woman who had died just between James's birth and the 1841 census. James was born in Wantage supposedly just after civil registration started, but I haven't found a birth registration for him in 1837/38.
Any ideas anyone?

Hi LizzieL again,

I don't know if this throws a spanner in the works but there is a baptism in Wantage thus;
30-6-1833 Harriet Wiltshire d/o Sarah, single woman, of East Lockinge.

I couldn't see an entry for James.

The only single Sarah of East Lockinge that I have is daughter of William, I had her death as 1838. So it could be possible that Harriet is actually William's granddaughter (as I first thought) but he adopted his daughter's illegitimate child after the daughter died.
If James also turns out to be the son of Sarah (single woman) then it makes that theory even more likely.
