Coughlin/Coughlan mid-1800s IRE to Yonkers, NY
« on: Tuesday 28 April 15 22:50 BST (UK) »
I have two Coughlin/Coughlan brothers who immigrated to Yonkers, New York, where they lived and died, two houses apart.      Immigration prior to the mid-1860s.      Would like to discover Irish county of birth.  Have not found any US VR which indicate County of Birth.

Brothers:
John, b.abt 1834, Ireland, county/town unknown
Daniel, b.abt 1839, Ireland, county/town unknown

Their Parents:  Daniel Coughlin and Julia (___).
Born in Ireland, county/town unknown.
Probably married prior to 1835, in Ireland, location unknown.

John died in Yonkers in 1904.   He married Mary (___) [born in Ireland] and their children (all born in Yonkers 1860-1877) were:  Julia, Daniel (A), Bridget, Ellen, Mary, Margaret, Catherine, Michael and Daniel (B).

Daniel died in Yonkers in 1906.  He married (1) Nora O'Brien [born in Ireland] who died prior to 1880.  Their children (born in NY 1867-1880) were: Julia, Ellen and Joseph.  He married (2) Bridget Haley, who outlived him.

Not sure if they were related, but there were several other Coughlin families in the same neighborhood.    Two with the given name of Cornelius and one called Martin.

Thanks for any help or direction you can provide.

Hi,
I am back.
The Julia death record was the only one I could find. In Family search .org they have it as being 1873 and her age being 60.
This one below says she is 50, ok.
This record was in 1863, in 1864 Civil records were introduced in Ireland.
What I suggest you do is, write to

The Church of Ireland
Mallow
County Cork.
Ireland

Ask them for the records, of the John and Daniel.

Church of Ireland
St James Avenue, Mallow, Co. Cork Tel: 022-21473

We are going to Mallow in July to hear a Bluegrass Group that we try and follow.
Hope this is a help

Not all people buried in Church of Ireland ground would have been Church of Ireland so the boys (if this is indeed their mother) might not have been baptised there.

Since you don't know where in Ireland the Coughlin boys came from then it may be impossible to tell from this burial record if this is their mother. Remember that not many burial records survive (usually only Church of Ireland kept such a register) and of those records that do survive not all are found online.

Maggsie, thanks for looking.   But I agree with Aghadowey.  Without a reference to another family member, there is no proof that this is the mother I'm looking for.  Though it is possible that the actual governmental death record  might include the name of the informant.    But, for the moment, I'll pass on this one.    Julia Coughlin's are probably very common in Ireland records.

The burial was 1863 just before the start of death registration so there will be no civil certificate.

Just to clarify what you have from the US end of things - do you have obituaries, naturalization records if they naturalized, and/or wills?  If not, it seems there are some possible matches on the indexes on the Westchester Co. Archives site.  http://archives.westchestergov.com/online-indexes
