William Sharpe Soham area 1700s
« on: Wednesday 29 April 15 13:23 BST (UK) »
Hi there I am trying to find out more about William Sharpe . The only thing I know about him is that he had an illegitimate child with Jane Langford in 1752 in Soham.  The child was Henry Langford who was listed as a bastard father William Sharpe. Jane Langford was born 1732 in Stuntney. She later mmarried someone else. Do I have any hope of finding out anything about William with so little knowledge of him? Any replies would be gratefully received.
Thank you Vicky

If that is him, there is a possibility that he was already married and that is why he and Jane didn't marry

Wow thanks for that. I didn't even think he might already be married. What a scoundrel.  Would it have not been more hush hush if he were married?  Henry I'd christened as Henry Sharpe or Langford.  I would have thought the father wouldn't have wanted his name on the christening record especially if was married.

Perhaps Jane was made to name the father, or maybe the vicar knew the circumstances and decided to "name and shame." It does seem odd if they were both single why they didn't marry?

Even more shocking, if that is the right William Sharpe, he appears to have had children with his wife Sarah.

Sarah Sharp baptised 6th October 1752  died 5th Sept 1757

It is pretty shocking that both his women had children in the same year. I found him on family search.  His wife sarah died a month after their daughter sarah was christened.  So the man was left wireless.  I can't find another marriage but I guess it's possible he married again
